Samphire (Salicornia) is a plant that grows in sapal zones, recently incorporated into the gourmet kitchen. As they grow in areas of strong marine influence, these plants are naturally subject to environmental pressures that lead them to produce antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols and vitamins A and E, which are highly valued for their nutritional which can bring an additional benefit to our health

The Agro-On, a company with a strong innovative character algarvian in agro-food sector. Initiated, five years ago, works of culture of halophytes plants and, for about two years, the cultivation by hydroponics of these vegetables. Among them the samphire (salicornia), which sells close to "fine dining" restaurants. The samphire (salicornia) produced by Agro-On, marketed under the name Salicórnia Natural of Ria Formosa® (Salicornia Native to the Ria Formosa), was very well accepted by this public,  and was considered better organoletically than the product harvested in the wild and other salicornias on the market. is cementing its niche in the market, improving salicornia's production and marketing aspects by differentiating Salicórnia Natural of Ria Formosa® from other similar products currently on the market.

To this end, the Agro-On has created a partnership with the University of the Algarve (UAlg), from which comes the XtremeGourmet project. This project aims to help implement a form of sustainable agriculture, which promotes the consumption of healthy products with additional health benefits, with capacity to boost the development of the region and establishing quality objectives standards for plants marketed.
